Top 75 Universities in Merchandise Royalties

University of Texas tops the list. The report included this snippet:

The University of Kansas' men's basketball national champions licensing program has set a record for the most royalties generated specifically from the sale of men's basketball national champions merchandise. The previous record was held by North Carolina following its 2005 National Championship.

Quote of the Day

Andrew Roth

CAGW's David Williams writes about how the government is already screwing up the upcoming 2010 Census because of technology problems. Excerpt:

It boggles the mind to think that while 10 year olds sit in their basement and make sophisticated YouTube videos, a multi billion dollar government agency acts like the keystone cops in trying to perform a basic function of government, counting people.

Poll Results: Alaska Primary

Nachama Soloveichik

To: Patrick Toomey

From: McLaughlin & Associates

Date: August 19, 2008

Re: Survey Results

________________________________________________________________________________________

Methodology: This survey of 300 likely Republican primary election voters in Alaska was conducted on August 18th 2008 and correlates with a similar poll conducted August 7th, 2008. All interviews were conducted via telephone by professional interviewers. Interview selection was random within predetermined election units. These units were structured to correlate with actual voter turnout in a statewide Republican primary election. The survey of 300 likely Republican primary election voters has an accuracy of ± 5.7% at the 95% confidence interval.

Republican Primary Election Summary:

As they move into the final week before the Republican Primary for United States Congress, it has become a two way race between Don Young and Sean Parnell. Sean Parnell who was trailing Don Young in the last poll 42.7% to 39.3% has moved ahead of Don Young in the ballot, leading 44.3% to 42.0%. In fact, Parnell's lead is higher among the 3 in 4 voters who have a firm opinion of both candidates, 47.8% to 39.8%. As the few remaining undecided voters make up their minds in the final days, it appears Sean Parnell will win the primary this coming Tuesday.

If the Republican primary election for US Congress were held today, for whom would you vote among the following individuals?

New TV and Radio Ads in Alaska

Press Release

Club for Growth PAC Releases New TV and Radio Ads in Alaska Congressional Race

Washington - Today, the Club for Growth PAC begins airing a new television ad in Alaska as part of its ongoing ad buy as well as a new radio ad. The television ad will run on broadcast television and cable systems throughout the state through primary day (listen to radio ad here).

"It's sad about Don Young because after thirty-five years in Washington, he became just another Washington politician," said Club for Growth Executive Director David Keating.

Both the television and radio ads criticize Young for inserting a $10 million earmark for a road in Florida that would benefit a real estate developer that raised $40,000 for Young's campaign (Anchorage Daily News, 04/21/08). And just this year, Don Young broke his pledge to oppose all tax increases and voted with the Democrats to raise income taxes (RC #330, 05/15/08). The radio ad also informs voters that Young was absent from committee hearings 75% of the time since 2006.

"If Alaskans want to elect a true reformer, it is clear that Don Young does not fit the bill," said Keating. "In contrast, Sean Parnell has a record of conservatism and reform and that's why he was endorsed by Alaska's popular governor, Sarah Palin."

Chambliss Polling Below 50%

Andrew Roth

Senator Saxby Chambliss, up for re-election, is up only 6 points against his Democratic challenger, Jim Martin. The Rasmussen Reports shows the race at 48% to 43%. It's the first time that Chambliss is under 50%.

Does Chambliss' drop in the polls has anything to do with his Gang of 10 membership? It's hard to think otherwise.

A Solution to Obscene Oil Profits

Andrew Roth

In such a simple way, University of Vermont economist Art Woolf destroys the Left's argument against obscene oil profits:

Break Exxon Mobil up into 10 smaller firms and each would have only $1.17 billion in profits.

Woolf has more insightful commentary here. By the way, Woolf was one of the 1,028 economists who signed our petition against protectionist policies towards China.

Will Dems Shut Down the Government?

Andrew Roth

Get ready for a showdown over a government shutdown. From Steve Moore at the Wall Street Journal ($):

Smart Republicans like Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Jeb Hensarling of Texas are starting to recognize their party holds the ultimate trump card in the current energy debate. In 41 days, the long-imposed moratorium on offshore oil drilling and domestic oil shale production is set to expire -- gone. This happens automatically and can be stopped only if Congress votes to reestablish the ban. Lifting the moratorium might free up as much as 100 years worth of oil and gas for domestic consumption.

But keeping domestic energy supplies off limits is something Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and their environmentalist allies desperately want to do. Ms. Pelosi has said that stopping new oil production is about "saving the planet." Nevertheless, Mr. DeMint tells me it would be "tough vote for congressional Democrats to make just weeks before an election."

No kidding, with gas prices at near $4 a gallon and polls showing voters supporting an America-first drilling strategy by a two-to-one margin. An even bigger headache for Democrats, Mr. DeMint has his hands on a letter signed by only 38 Senators who have pledged to maintain the ban. Democrats would need 60 votes to get a budget passed with the drilling moratorium rider attached.

Can Republicans keep it together? A House Democratic leadership aide says Democrats will accuse Republicans of shutting down the government and preventing seniors from collecting Social Security checks. But Democrats run Congress now, so "it will be difficult for Pelosi and her gang to blame the minority Republicans for a congressional train wreck," answers Mr. DeMint.

Yet some Republicans are gun-shy, recalling the failed shutdown strategy of 1995. There's concern that Republican leaders may not be able to hold the line under pressure and that northeastern Republicans might crack. Newt Gingrich has a more sanguine take: Democrats are going to have a hard time explaining why they "shut down the government to prevent oil drilling," he says.

The consensus among conservatives on Capitol Hill aligns with Mr. Gingrich. A high stakes showdown is exactly what these Republicans believe the GOP should be seeking. Democrats are on the run on high gas prices, and the only thing that can bail them out is a bad compromise like the bipartisan so-called "Gang of 10" proposal that calls for higher taxes, more subsidies and leaves two-thirds of the outer continental shelf oil off-limits.

Was the Phelps Win a Conspiracy?

Andrew Roth

I love the Internet. There's already a website claiming that Michael Phelps' gold medal victory in the 100m butterfly was a conspiracy of "Olympic proportions."

I don't care if it is or not, but I love how people all over the world take information, analysis it, dissect it, scrutinize it, and then push an opinion on what they find.

From the Daily Mail in Great Britain:

A bizarre Government-funded campaign is being launched to encourage people to exercise while they’re waiting for a bus.

According to the campaign’s organisers, those minutes spent at the bus stop watching the traffic go by could be spent more usefully – by standing on one leg, pointing your toes or clenching your buttocks.
